New study/ Blood test that helps identify heart disease

A "cheap and simple" blood test could help identify individuals at higher risk of dying from heart problems, a new study has suggested.

Experts have shown that 50% of these people are likely to die from a heart complication over a three-year period.

Patients affected by these diseases have a special protein in their body called neuropeptide Y (NPY). It is suggested that this test could help identify patients who need further treatment early on and predict the progression of the disease, The Sun reports.

DETAILS FROM THE STUDY:

Heart problems can lead to frequent hospital visits and reduced quality of life, and there is currently no cure.

The combination of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and B-Type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) measurements can help diagnose heart disease and identify patients at higher risk.

Early identification of these patients can help doctors decide on the right treatment, including the placement of a life-saving implant such as implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). It is hoped that this test will be used to help treat heart disease patients within 5 years.

Professor of cardiovascular medicine and consultant cardiologist at the University of Oxford, Neil Herring, said the research findings were an exciting development, building on long-standing research work on the stress hormone spanning more than 10 years.

He hopes their research will benefit the growing number of patients who are dealing with the debilitating effects of heart failure every day.

The expert added that they will continue to investigate whether measuring very high levels of neuropeptide Y could influence the placement of life-saving treatments such as implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) for patients before the blood test becomes routine within five years. ./ CNA
