According to recent studies for the over 50s, sleeping less than five hours can increase the risk of a host of chronic health problems.
The PLoS Medicine study found that people in their 50s who slept five hours or less had a 30% greater risk of various diseases than those who slept seven hours.
Experts aren't yet clear on what the "golden daily amount of sleep" is needed, but they generally recommend about seven or eight hours of sleep.
