Hard bones/ Nuts, harder than milk

Milk and other foods rich in calcium are the main choice for adults and especially for children.

However, recent research has shown that walnuts, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate and almonds are equally important in terms of calcium content.

A recent study was presented at the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies, which AgroWeb.org also refers to in this article. This study found that foods rich in magnesium play a very important role for bones.

The maintenance of bones in adults, but especially the growth of children, requires a variety of nutrients. One of them is undoubtedly magnesium, experts say, an element that is abundant in walnuts.

Calcium is important, but in the case of children, teenagers, but also adults, who eat small amounts of this mineral, it is not more important than magnesium.

Magnesium is important for bone health in adults, this was known. But there have been few studies that have examined the role of magnesium in the mineral content of bones in children.

Results of the study

The study in question was conducted on 63 children aged 4 to 8 years who were not taking additional multivitamins.

All foods and beverages served during the study contained the same amounts of calcium and magnesium consumed each day.

Food and beverages were measured and weighed before and after each meal. This was to estimate the amount of calcium and magnesium the children had actually consumed.

The results showed that the consumed and absorbed amounts of magnesium were key indicators of bone health in the children's bodies.

Daily calcium intakes, on the other hand, were not necessarily related to total bone mineral content or bone density.

The study concluded that it is very important for children to have a healthy diet of minerals, including calcium and magnesium. Read here about magnesium-rich foods besides nuts. /AgroWeb.org
