Chemicals present in tap water and hundreds of other consumer products may accelerate the progression of cancer, a new study has found.

Researchers at the Yale School of Public Health found that PFAS, a group of chemicals used to make fluoropolymer coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease and water, help spread cancer.

What are the 'lifetime chemicals'?

In addition to remaining in the environment for long periods, PFAS accumulate in the human body with toxic effects.

"PFAS constitute a widespread class of persistent organic pollutants of increasing public concern worldwide," said co-author Jie Zheng.

"They have often been detected in the environment, such as in drinking water, indoor dust, cleaning products and clothing," he added.

Thanks to their water-resistant and non-stick properties, PFAS are commonly used in household items such as cookware and fabrics.

Studies have found that 97 percent of people in the US have detectable levels of "permanent chemicals" in their blood.

How is PFAS linked to cancer?

Numerous studies have linked PFAS to higher rates of cancer, including kidney, prostate and breast cancer.

Research is ongoing to understand how the substances affect the body, but exposure to chemicals, especially at high levels, appears to alter biological pathways.

This is worrisome because when cancer metastasizes, it becomes more difficult to treat./ CNA
