Pogradec is experiencing a significant transformation thanks to major projects being implemented by the municipality in collaboration with the government.
The Mayor, Ilir Xhakoli, in an interview with CNA TV, emphasized the importance of three main projects for the city and surrounding areas.
One of the most important investments is the wastewater treatment project in the Hudenisht administrative unit, which lies along the shores of Lake Ohrid. This investment, according to Xhakolli, is a necessity to meet UNESCO requirements and to protect the environment, especially in the village of Lin, which is part of the national “100 Villages” program. “The project is nearing completion and has a significant value, giving a new development to this area,” said Xhakolli.

"Three are the most important, in addition to the tasks that the municipality has in serving the citizens, for us there are three important ones such as the wastewater sewage project in the Hudënisht unit, that is, the entire unit lying on the shores of Lake Ohrid, where the lake shore is protected by UNESCO and has been one of their critical conditions, especially for the Lin area, which is one of the best villages in Albania and part of the "100 Villages" project. It was a necessity to apply. The government responded to us. The project is at the end of the process, it is a considerable value and gives an unprecedented development to this entire area."

Another project with a major impact is the improvement of drinking water supply. In recent years, investments in the water supply system have been completed in the villages of Çërrava, Velçan and Proptisht, and now it is Trebinje's turn.
"This project is in the tendering phase and implementation is expected to begin very soon, providing drinking water supply for five villages in this administrative unit," said Xhakoli, adding that 11 other remote villages will benefit from similar investments.

"Meanwhile, another project is important. You know that Pogradec has focused on supplying drinking water and sewage for the past 5-6 years. It is a tourist city that definitely needs these two conditions to be met. We have finished supplying drinking water to Ccerrava, Velccani, Proptisti, and we are left with Trebinje. This village is also in the tendering process and I believe that the implementation of the project will begin very soon, which means that the most important part of the Trebinje administrative unit, which starts from Dunica, Guri i Bardhë, which is a source of drinking water, will flow naturally to 5 villages. Pogradec has about 11 villages left that are far from these projects because they cannot be connected to them, but will be done by the water supply company with the support of the government for materials and the expertise of the water supply company employees."

Also, road infrastructure remains a priority for the Pogradec municipality. The Shën Marena road, which connects Trebinje with several villages, as well as the Bishnica road, are in the process of being completed. Mayor Xhakoli has indicated that the total asphalting of the Bishnica - Slabinje road with a focus on Shën Marena is expected to be completed within 3 months, while it is also expected that the project that will connect the highlands of this municipality with the new Qafë Plloçë road will be awarded.

"Another important project is the Shën Marena road, from Trebinje it connects to several other villages and goes to Shën Marena. The other road to Bishnica, goes to the outskirts of Slabinja with the municipality's asphalt project, and continues 10 km to Bishnica with white roads supported by the government. It will be finished in about 2-3 months and we only have the Gora part left. I say that the government will give us that too because we have submitted the project, it connects the entire highland of the Pogradec municipality with the Qafë Plloccë road, which I believe will be inaugurated in May or June."

In addition to these major projects, the Municipality of Pogradec is also working to improve local infrastructure, such as the completion of the school in Geshtenjas and the repair of roads in the Buçimas administrative unit, where after the main roads, the internal alleys of the villages will also be asphalted.

"These are the most important projects of this year, of course there are other projects that are in progress, such as the school in Geshtenjas. A project that we cannot call very large but which is very important for the residents, is the completion of the main roads of the Buccimas administrative unit. Now we will also build the alleys of all these villages, as we consider them part of the city."

With these investments, Pogradec aims to improve the quality of life for residents and increase the tourist potential of the area, making it one of the most developed destinations in Albania. /CNA
