Lost Zagoria: The Destruction of the Hoshteva Bridge

The destruction of the Hoshteva Bridge in Gjirokastra has created a void in the souls of the residents who mourned its collapse. A popular elegy is all that remains of the bridge, as state authorities have not taken action to rebuild or replace one of the symbols of Zagoria.

On February 4, 2018, Albanians witnessed a funeral procession for the bridge of the villages of Lliar-Hoshtevë, now immortalized in the popular elegy titled, "The teardrop turned into a river," by Kristaq Shabani.

As one of the symbols of Zagoria, the Hoshteva Bridge and others nearby were built by Ali Pasha, as a debt he owed to the Zagorites who sheltered him in the mountains when they were pursuing him to kill him, before he became the great pasha we all know today.

Residents' calls and announcements over the years about the degradation of the bridge fell on deaf ears, so much so that the bridge tragically collapsed in 2018, ironically after the former minister of culture and MP for the area, Mirela Kumbaro, a month before the event guaranteed its restoration and according to the experts she sent, "nothing would have been found of the bridge" during that winter./ Amfora.al
