"Korça in the First World War"/ Soon the scientific conference

"Korça in the first world war, self-government and social economic developments" - this is the name of the international scientific conference held for two consecutive days in the city of Korça.

A conference that brought together different authors who shed light on the important historical developments of the war period, with about 25 statements that appeared in the premises of Fan Noli University.

This conference has come as a collaboration of the District Council with the University of Korça, and with that of Tirana, on the 110th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War and the 108th anniversary of the declaration of the autonomous province of Korça.

The Chairman of the District Council, Erjon Nexhipi, told Cna Tv the purpose of this conference, while he emphasized that there will be subsequent ones for emblematic figures such as Llazar Zai Fundo, to highlight the values ??of these people as well as to develop further the region.

"This year marks the 110th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War and the 108th anniversary of the declaration of the autonomous province of Korça. The District Council in cooperation with the university, in the wake of the activities it has developed this year, organizes this scientific conference, inviting 30 authors with about 25 statements to shed light on those historical developments, which belong to this very important period of our history. The cooperation with the University of Korça is stable and for the coming year we have planned other conferences. Among them is a conference for Korça philanthropists, a conference for an emblematic figure like Zai Fundo. We also have planned an international conference that coincides with the 55th anniversary of the establishment of the University of Korça. for the development priorities of our region. We have other activities that I believe will add value to our joint work for the development of the Korca Region."

The leading part of this conference was Prof. Dr. Valentina Duka, who has shown more details about this very important activity for the history of Korça. Initially, Duka says that during the first world war, Korça was occupied by the French, while Albania was occupied by the Austro-Hungarians and the Italians positioned in the north and southwest. Although the smallest area, Korça was the most important. Among other things, the Duke says that he is proud of the patriots from Korcar who have given a lot to our country.

"The conference that is organized today is organized by the University of Tirana in cooperation with many other public universities in Albania and not only, also in the habitat where Albanian is spoken because we have colleagues from the University of Kosovo, from the universities of North Macedonia. It is dedicated to 110 the anniversary of the beginning of the First World War, with which Korça is very connected, because during this war, Korça, together with the surroundings that were occupied by the fans, was the smallest area of ??the first world war because almost Albania politics was occupied by the Austro-Hungarians in the north, the southwest by the Italians and the southeast by the French. Although it was the smallest area, it is one of the most important areas. Every time I approach the history of the city, I really become very proud of my hometown, for the patriots from Korça who have given so much to the national issue, education, culture and Albanian state formation."

Valentina Duka further shows that Korça was in great poverty in 1916 when they created their republic which was the biggest challenge of the time. In addition to poverty, Korça was also affected by an infectious disease that claimed many lives.

"Even during the First World War, they created their own Republic on December 10, 1916, where together Muslims and Christians worked, learned and administered one of the most emancipated cities of the time. Of course, it was a challenge because Korça was in a very great poverty. At that time, Korca was also widely invaded by an infectious disease called the Spanish flu, which was brought by Senegalese soldiers as part of the French army, so there were mass deaths. There was great poverty, therefore the Republic of Korça took all measures, not only to overcome poverty, but also took all measures for the financial and currency stabilization of the city."

What foreign historians call a miracle of the Republic is the issue of Albanian education. The Duke tells the story of the Albanian schools that managed to open, while also emphasizing the great decision at the Peace Conference that Korça should remain in Albania and Albania should exist as an independent state.

"But what all foreign historians call a miracle of the Republic, is the phenomenon, the Albanian education. They closed the schools in the Greek language that were open throughout the city, or in the same buildings they opened schools in the Albanian language. They supported by the French, they created one of the best Albanian lyceums that probably rose to the level of a high school, which was the French High School of Korça, where dozens of students were trained even after World War I. They they learned western legislation from the French, they learned from the French how to clean the city, the French for the interests of the front did a lot of work, but despite the fact that the Republic of Korça had a short life, it was abrogated in February 18, again the French even after that abrogated, they did not make deep reforms in support of the Venezuelan Greeks who support the Entente, but the Albanian bureaucrats of the time of the Republic continued to be and the Korcars continued they were grateful to the French because together both faiths learned how to govern themselves. It was an extremely large achievement for Albania at that time. The French kept Korca occupied even during 1919. They left in May 1920, when fortunately the Peace Conference that was working in Paris made a very important decision that Korça would remain in Albania and Albania would exist as an independent state. For this, we should be grateful to the president of the USA at that time, Wilson, who did not accept the decision of the three European powers, England, France and Italy, to dismember Albania."

The city of Korça is a history in itself, which carries priceless values, with the way of its governance, with the Korça patriots who left their mark on the formation of the country, education, culture, tradition, which makes every citizen of Korça proud to this day. The International Scientific Conference was a success in the southeastern city, with the participation of 30 authors who held more than 25 papers working and studying hard on the history of Korça. The District Council will continue with such activities dedicated to emblematic figures such as Llazar Zai Fundo, and many others who have contributed to the history of our country./ CNA
