The EU Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, conducted observations of the electoral process in Durrës this Sunday. Speaking to the media from the coastal city, Gonzato said that the reason for this inspection is to closely observe the voting, the opinions of citizens and how the process is progressing in general.

Gonzato said that the way these elections will go is also important for the EU membership process.

"We wanted to see how the election process is going in other cities. We also have my colleagues from EU member states who have come to observe. The reason why we are doing this is not because we do not trust the OSCE-ODIHR. They are doing a lot of good work, but because we also want to have our own experience, to see things closely, the opinions of citizens and how the process is going in general. As I said, these are the first elections organized after the opening of negotiations and in fact it is about the most fundamental issue, human rights.
