"Digital safety should become part of early education"/ Sala: We are

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the United Nations in Albania, partner civil society organizations, and young women and men activists across the country, launched the "16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence" campaign, with the theme "No Excuse for Online Violence".

In the spotlight this year is the growing threat of violence via the internet, for which Albania marks large-scale efforts and commitments aimed at raising awareness and mobilizing communities for action.

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Evis Sala, at the campaign's opening ceremony, underlined that preventing and responding to violence against women and girls, including in digital spaces, requires clear policies, strong institutions, and collective will.

"Albania is among the first countries to address violence caused by technology. The new draft law on the prevention and protection against violence against women and domestic violence, as well as the proposals for the respective improvement of the Criminal Code, are a good basis for the legislative framework.

We are strengthening the capacities of institutions and law enforcement structures, through a clear definition of the roles of state institutions in preventing and addressing cyber violence. Digital safety should become part of early education, integrating this topic into school curricula, so that children and young people have the necessary skills to navigate the online world safely. We will also guarantee specialized support for victims of digital violence, while building bridges of cooperation with digital platforms, technology companies and the private sector” , the minister underlined.

Ingrid Macdonald, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, emphasized:

As we begin the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, we are faced with a stark reality that demands urgent action: digital violence is increasing at an alarming rate. In Albania, 41% of women have faced online violence, while globally 1.8 billion women continue to lack legal protection. Every woman and girl deserves safety, dignity, and the freedom to live free from violence in all aspects of life, online and offline. While these 16 Days of Activism are crucial in bringing the issue to the forefront, our fight cannot stop when the campaign ends. Ending digital violence is an urgent and unquestionable task and must serve as a guiding principle in our actions every day.

Also, at this ceremony, 10 recognition awards were presented to representatives from various fields of society, in appreciation of their contribution to the protection of girls and women, as well as in the fight against violence against them.

During the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, educational activities, youth-led events, school initiatives, community forums and artistic performances will take place across the country, aiming to challenge harmful norms and promote a culture of safety and respect, both online and offline./ CNA
