Prime Minister Edi Rama was asked this Monday if Albania intends to withdraw from EU integration and join the BRICS group.
Rama told the German media "Berliner Zeitung" that this is not going to happen.
He stated that BRICS is a joke and Albania's goal is to become part of the European Union.
"First: BRICS is a joke. Second, history has taught us the hard way that there is only one country we can rely on. This is Europe, the European Union. We want to be part of the European Union. The integration process is an important journey with a great purpose. There is no alternative to this path. There is no temptation to look elsewhere because we have been elsewhere and we know what it is like there," the head of government emphasized.
BRICS stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. This group has expanded to include Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Egypt. Saudi Arabia has been invited to join but has not yet done so.
Malaysia, Thailand and Azerbaijan have expressed interest in joining./ CNA
