Rama: When I was mayor, I started painting buildings because we didn't have

Prime Minister Edi Rama has spoken a little about his profession and passion as a painter.

During the interview with Richard Atias, Rama emphasized that during meetings he draws because it helps him find a kind of balance.

He said that when he has an intense subject and doesn't have anything to draw, he gets nervous very quickly.

Among other things, he shared the detail that when he was mayor, he decided to paint buildings because they didn't have the money to reconstruct them.

“I draw during meetings and it helps me maintain a kind of balance. I didn’t know this, but on the way I read a study, I think it was from the Department of Psychology at MIT. They had observed people who sketch during meetings, because there are a lot of people who are not artists and do this. There were two findings that left me speechless. One was that people who draw during meetings are on average 30 percent more focused on the topic being discussed. And it makes sense, because when you sit down to discuss, your mind is somewhere else, you look, you are often somewhere else. Whereas, when your eye and hand are occupied with something on their own, you are automatically focused on what is being discussed. The second finding was that 50 percent of those who sketch during a meeting are less stressed by the topic of discussion and I can testify to this. When there is an intense topic and I don’t have something to draw, I get nervous very quickly. The opposite happens when you draw, you sit and wait for your moment to “come "killed" and you don't throw yourself at just anyone.

This helps me. I believe it helped me in the beginning, when I was mayor and I started painting buildings with colors – because we didn't have money – then from colors we went further. In general, there is a tendency of people who say we need artists to govern us, but I would say that is not true. It is the person, not the profession. You can have an artist who is terrible and you can have a lawyer who is fantastic to govern, so it has to do with people, not with categories. But, perhaps, since politicians have become such a little respected category and, I think, for all the wrong reasons, then this tendency is that come on, we need to find salvation in an artist. That is not the case at all. I believe that there are bad politicians, just as there are good politicians, just as there are good investors and bad investors", said Rama./ CNA
