In today's plenary session, an interview is taking place with the Minister of Defense, Niko Peleshi, where he is giving clarifications on what will happen to the arms industry in the country.

Minister Peleshi made a history of what has happened to the inherited stock of weapons, ammunition and infrastructure from communism.

He said that Albania has an obligation to increase the reserve level of ammunition and weapons. According to the minister for arms production, agreements will be reached with foreign investors. 

Niko Peleshi's words: 

We were the most militarized in the communist period, we had 25 percent of GDP that we paid for the army and defense. It was a period of national paranoia.  After the fall of communism, we inherited a large stock of ammunition, weapons and infrastructure.
More than 30 years later, I say that a large part of the infrastructure is a heavy burden to solve in order to adapt to the new strategies and adjustments that the FA must make now that we are part of NATO.

Today we have 3 state enterprises of the former military industry, because they are not in production. Today the geopolitical situation has changed.

We are today in a period where peace is more threatened than ever.  This challenged the world defense industrial base which increased the demand for armaments.  Albania has an obligation to increase the reserve level of ammunition and weapons. The revitalization of the military industry is a strategic goal, so we are entering a new era of demilitarization.

It is not intended to be done with state enterprises, but by attracting foreign investors./ CNA
