The DP and the opposition started the year 2024 again in action against the Rama government, but without the head of the DP and the leader of the opposition, Sali Berisha, who as of December 30, 2023, began to suffer the security measure of house arrest.
Berisha until November 27, 2024, when he was released from the security measures, every day supported by sympathizers located under his apartment regardless of the cold or sunny weather, gave speeches denouncing any illegal actions in his opinion of the Rama government and also called on the Albanians to support the calls for protests and civil disobedience, against the decision to arrest him and Jamarbër Malltez, on charges of the file called "Partisan".
With Berisha away from the headquarters and the parliament, the DP continued to protest in plenary sessions, commissions, but also outside these institutions while also facing the division within the party with the deputies who were divided into two groups, one supporting Sali Berisha and the other Lulzim Basha.
On February 20, the PD of the re-establishment held a national protest, where Berisha spoke online and raised accusations against Prime Minister Rama. Strong clashes were registered between the protesters and the police.
The next national protest demanding the release of Berisha, who was described as a political prisoner by the right, was held on March 3 amid political incidents and messages.
Among the accusations and counter-accusations regarding the legitimacy of the DP logo and seal, on June 11, the Court of Appeal in Tirana decided to recognize Sali Berisha as the president of the DP, and also giving him the legitimacy of the party's seal and logo. It was hailed by the re-establishment group as a victory.
"United in battle," was the motto of the protest held at 20:00 on July 11, where the democrats called on Albanians to oppose the criminal and anti-European regime of Edi Rama. The head of the DP, Berisha, once again gave his speech online. The protestors who initially gathered in front of the Prime Minister's Office continued the protest at the Municipality of Tirana.
Movements and protests intensified even more in September, where the action of DP deputies extended to the parliamentary committees and also inside the parliament.
Among the events that aggravated the situation between the majority and the opposition was the court's decision to sentence MP Salianji to one year in prison for making a false statement on the "Babale" case, a decision deemed political by the PD and which escalated in the September 30 session.
DP deputies burned their chairs outside the parliament and declared that they will no longer allow the development of normal parliamentary life if Salianji is not released.
Then PD warned 77 forms of civil disobedience. The first started on October 7, without political speeches, marched in almost all the streets of Tirana, this time there were also clashes with the police and tear gas.
Protests, one of the ways to raise one's voice for certain causes, but the Democratic Party saw the need for an international reaction that did not come. In order to accelerate this step, it was decided to go all the way to Strasbourg.
30 deputies held a sensitizing demonstration in front of the European Parliament. With the banners "Stop the political persecution of the opposition", "Free the deputy Salianji" and "Edi Rama = narcostate", the members of the opposition parliamentary group declared that in Strasbourg they showed their international colleagues the reality that the Albanian government is hiding from them.
According to the organization, 5 roundabouts and the main entry-exit points of the cities were blocked for three hours.
In Tirana, the protesters settled in the "Shqiponja" square, and then in Milot, Shkozet, the roundabout of Rrogozhina, Levan and Bradashesh. There was no lack of tension and also accompanied by criminal proceedings by the police.
The organization of November 26, which was the penultimate one for 2024, was evaluated as the most productive and also among the most fiery. Tear gas, vehicles with water to disperse the crowds, a high number of participants, at the head of each protest point were deputies of the PD and the opposition.
It was considered one of the most productive protests since 3 days later, a decision of the Court against corruption and organized crime decided to annul the "House Arrest" decision for the leader of the DP, Sali Berisha.
The joy among the democrats was great, for the achievement of one of the main demands during the protests. Berisha physically returned to head PD and headquarters after 333 days.
Free Berisha is only one side of the coin that PD was not completely satisfied with. The technical government, its vote in parliament and going with it to the 2025 elections, is the next objective.
To aim for this objective, civil disobedience was baptized as the code for the overthrow of the dictatorship, a code that was also proven on December 23.
180 minutes of protest in 5 key points of Tirana, at the City Hall of Tirana, Elbasani street, "Willson" square, Zogu i Black and Palati me Shigjeta, for the first time the head of PD, Sali Berisha, was physically present.
For blocking the roads, the police called that it is a criminal offense, but the sounds of the megaphone were ignored.
Hundreds of people defied the atmospheric conditions, but also the postponements and the pressure of the law enforcement forces to clear the streets, so much so that the clashes also resulted in the injury of several deputies and representatives of the Democratic Party.
May 11, 2025, Albanians will go to the polls where they will decide whether they will trust the SP with another mandate, which would be the fourth in a row, or trust the keys to the new government of Sali Berisha and PD./ CNA
