DP requests extension of deadline for election registration, SP against/

State Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi stated in a press conference today that March 9th could be the deadline for election registration, as the preliminary list must be announced.

Earlier, the Democratic Party requested an extension of the deadline for diaspora registration, so that it would not end on March 4.

According to Celibashi, other deadlines can be discussed until March 9, but without a legal amendment, there can be no extension beyond this set date.

Celibashi added that the SP did not agree with this request, arguing that the 4th is the deadline known by everyone and a 2-3 day postponement would not change the situation.

"March 9 is a date that we cannot go beyond because it is determined by law. Until the 9th, we can talk and discuss other deadlines, so we cannot go beyond the 9th. There was a request to extend the deadline for days, for us there is no problem, but the Socialist Party did not agree with this idea, saying that the 4th is known to everyone and that it is the last deadline and extending it for 2 or 3 days would not change anything major," said Celibashi.

The Central Election Commission has requested additional funds of 9.3 million euros from the Parliament and the Ministry of Finance for the emigrant voting process for the general parliamentary elections of May 11.

"We have had a discussion with representatives of the Ministry of Finance, in principle there is an agreement to support the CEC budget for an additional budget. In principle there is no hesitation from the government to support the CEC regarding this aspect," said Celibashi.

Celibashi said that only international, not Albanian, posts will be invited for the diaspora vote.

"We are not inviting the Albanian Post to the tender, only international operators that have their representatives in Albania to be part of the selection procedure. The negotiations will start next week, if the government gives us the funds this week," said Celibashi. /CNA
