The agreement for immigrants / Meloni: Pact, lesson for Europe
The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni

The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni in an interview for "Corriere della Sera" that she has never made a choice for which she should feel ashamed, despite the mistakes she knows herself.

Meloni has stated that the agreement with Albania is a lesson for Europe and aims to deliver a fatal blow to criminal organizations that benefit from immigrants.

"The executive has made correct choices regarding the issue of immigration and the protocol signed with Albania is one of them. It is a very innovative solution, which is serving as a lesson not only in Europe, but also beyond, as it is clearly intended to deal a fatal blow to criminal organizations that speculate on immigrants to fatten their profits." said Meloni.

Prime Minister Meloni says that the issue of immigration has been in the focus of discussions with British Prime Minister Starmer, describing the agreement with the Albanian side as an example that should be followed.

"It is a phenomenon that affects the entire European continent, even outside the borders of the EU. With Starmer we agree that we must intensify the fight against traffickers, work towards greater cooperation between our police, strengthen the commitment to voluntary repatriations and not be afraid to also explore innovative solutions, such as the one Italy has launched through the protocol with Albania to process requests for asylum in non-EU territories, but under Italian and European jurisdiction," said Meloni.

Meloni's statements come at a time when, at the end of December, the Italian government decided to move forward with the implementation of the protocol for sending rejected asylum seekers to the Gjadri camp.

Giorgia Meloni's cabinet bases its plan to continue the agreement with Albania on the decision of the Supreme Court of December 19, where it is stated that it is the government's right to determine the list of safe countries of origin.

The Court of Rome, which with its decisions returned the ship Libra twice, has requested the opinion of the European Court for Human Rights on the safe countries of origin.

While on February 25, the European Court of Justice is expected to give a decision on the definition of safe places.

Even the head of the Italian government says that the issue of immigration has been the focus of discussions with the British Prime Minister Starmer, describing the agreement with the Albanian side as an example that should be followed.

"It is a phenomenon that affects the entire European continent, even outside the borders of the EU. With Starmer we agree that we must intensify the fight against traffickers, work towards greater cooperation between our police, strengthen the commitment to voluntary repatriations and not be afraid to also explore innovative solutions, such as the one Italy has launched through the protocol with Albania to process asylum requests in non-EU territories, but under Italian and European jurisdiction," said Meloni./ CNA
