Democratic Party MP Luan Baçi commented today on the political fate of the arrested former mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj.

Invited to A2CNN, Baçi said that Veliaj is an accidental figure in politics and that with the accusations brought against him, he has washed his hands of politics.

Baçi also shared his position regarding the issues on which a decision will be made regarding Velialt's sentence, while also listing several files that still weigh heavily against him without charges.

"Erion Veliaj is not like Fatos Nano, he is miles away. He is an accidental politician, from the servility of an organization he led and under Rama's shadow he became mayor. He has absolutely washed his hands of politics. He will be punished. Rama is doing him a great honor in fact. We say in vain that Rama is attacking him. Veliaj will be punished and will spend some time in prison. The reason is that Erion Veliaj is not being punished for what should be punished, for corruption, for theft, for the incinerator, for 5D.

His trial has been given a completely different direction than it should have been in fact. Therefore, any sentence he will receive will be for those pseudo-accusations. There is nothing in the file for which Veliaj should have been in prison. Seen from this perspective, even the move to the Constitutional Court will have an end: a sentence for Erion Veliaj with a short prison term, without being convicted for what he should have been.

Then, his return, not in politics, but somewhere as an appreciation for what he did for the party. Two years ago, two scoundrels from the municipality were convicted in Fier for the incinerator. A former vice-mayor, who was not the main author of the incinerator. 6 months before he was arrested, they removed him from the position of vice-mayor and made him director of Albpetrol. He made some money there and then served a year in prison. Today he has come out and the only thing he does is give "likes" to the Socialist Party, - said Baçi. /CNA
