"We will take several names into consideration"/ Alimehmeti: The DP

Democrat Ilir Alimehmeti commented today regarding the process of selecting a candidate from the opposition for the Tirana Municipality race.  

In an interview with A2CNN, Alimehmeti stated that the Democratic Party has extended its hand to any political force that feels like an opposition, to meet, even informally, to discuss the possibility of cooperation.

Alimehmeti said that there will be names from small parties that the DP will consider.

Alimehmeti added that even in agreement with the front, the opposition intends to give priority to a good and dignified candidacy.

"We have extended our hand to every force that feels like an opposition, we have told them, let's meet, even informally, to understand if there is a basis for cooperation. We need to undergo a process of national reconciliation so that we understand that things with each other are smaller compared to the national interest. This nation is dying. Is our youth running away from us? The birth rate is falling, it is a nation that is shrinking and aging.

A national reconciliation is necessary from the opposition camp. We must forget the differences and frictions in the past in the face of the evil we face. This is the spirit with which we go into these discussions; free hand for proposals from their side and they will be discussed. We are currently asking, as we are asking Mr. Shehaj, that he can definitely propose if there are some names that will absolutely be taken into consideration.

We are not going with our own name to seek support, but we are in the process of ventilating, which means we are taking different names, there are also names from civil society, dignified names that are being discussed. The criteria are that they must be oppositionists who have stood against the regime for a civil cause, a person with integrity, they must definitely overcome the party fence and enjoy the support of the entire opposition front that will be created. At this stage, we are in formal discussions.

This has been the line of work, then the opposition parliamentary parties if they feel themselves oppositional, we extend a hand of cooperation. And it is to Mr. Shehaj who has two deputies in parliament and then to the other parties and then also to civil society. Democracy is representation. Very soon we will meet Mr. Shehaj, if possible even today.

"We are in the phase where we are waiting for the proposals. If a good and dignified candidacy comes from the respective proposals, we want to give priority to this type of candidacy," Alimehmeti said. /CNA
