Greece blocks Albania: To resolve some issues before membership

After the problems with the Bejleri case, Greece has not signed the letter of the 27 member countries addressed to the EU Commission for the opening of the first five chapters of the membership process.

The news has been confirmed by Euractiv, where it is also emphasized that Athens is putting pressure on Tirana on some issues related to the rule of law, such as the case of Beler and the implementation of some laws related to the Greek minority in Albania, such as the rights of ownership.

" Athens is not closing the door on EU membership, but there are some issues that need to be resolved. With the way things have been for three weeks now, the process cannot continue. "- says the article of Euroactiv.

The tension between the two countries started in May of this year, where only two days before the local elections, when the candidate for mayor, Fredi Beleri, who is running under the opposition flag, was arrested on suspicion of vote buying.

Although under security measures, Bejleri won the elections in Himare, but he could not be sworn in as mayor because of the sentence.

Earlier in the week it was reported in the media that Athens had refused to support a letter asking the Commission to open the first five chapters of the negotiations.

The census is also an open issue between the two countries.
