Immigrants, the Council of Ministers approves the agreement with Italy

The Council of Ministers has given the green light to the approval of the agreement for the acceptance of immigrants from Italy.

In this Wednesday's meeting, the Council of Ministers approved the agreement, paving the way for its discussion in parliamentary committees, with interest groups and in the Assembly.

The agreement was signed on November 6, 2023 by the Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama and his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni.

By means of this decision of the Council of Ministers, taken by the number two of the government, Belinda Balluku, the establishment of the reception center for immigrants from Africa in Gjadër is legislated.

According to the agreement, the immigrants will land in Shengjin, while the camp where they will stay will be set up in Gjadër. From what the authorities have discovered so far, it is known that the maximum capacity that the center will receive in Albania cannot be more than 3 thousand immigrants per month. To guarantee security, the Italian police forces will be engaged to guard the internal perimeter of the camp.

Just like any other agreement between Albania and another country, this agreement will also be followed by the legal steps provided by the Constitution until its final approval in the Assembly.

This agreement has fueled numerous debates in the public opinion, where there have been accusations that Albania has volunteered to accept immigrants and that in this way it is ceding territory to Italy./ CNA
