The chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, raised an alarm on the Day of the Alphabet of the Albanian Language, which is celebrated for the first time as an official holiday.

Berisha said at the nightly protest of his supporters that the Albanian language was standardized 116 years ago, but illiteracy is the same as in the 1970s.

The former prime minister stated that illiteracy is increasing rapidly and the Albanian language is in danger.

"Today, every Albanian has a special day and this is the day of our language, the day of what constitutes the thread of our national identity, of the beautiful language that unites Albanians in all 4 corners of the earth.

This day is the day of adoption in Bitola, of the standardization of the alphabet of our language, the selection of its letters, almost born with them by the most prominent men of letters and language of the time, true signifiers of this language. Therefore, today we humble ourselves with the greatest honor, with the deepest respect before the work of all those who on November 22, 1908 made the Albanian language with its standard alphabet.

It was a historic success for Albanians, because after the League of Prizren, the Congress of Manastir is the most unifying national event for Albanians. But today, after 116 years, the Albanian language is in the greatest danger. Today illiteracy is growing rapidly and only from 2017-2023 it has increased by 10%.

Today, in the narco-dictatorship, the Albanian school experienced the biggest regression in its entire history. It suffered the horrific fall, the world's worst in the Pisa test last year. It also recorded the highest number, among the highest in the world, of functional illiterates in our schools. The number of illiterates in Albania today is equal to the 70s. All these are the bitter fruits of the dictatorship", stressed Berisha./ CNA
