Veliaj's arrest/ Rama to "Die Zeit": PS is not a protective

Prime Minister Edi Rama has given an interview to the German media outlet "Die Zeit".

Among other things, Rama was also asked about the arrest of Mayor Veliaj, who is accused of corruption and money laundering, among other things.

The Prime Minister said that a government is not judged by the fact that one or several members are under investigation for corruption, but by the way it reacts to such cases.

Rama further stated that his party is not anyone's protective shield, but only the protective shield of independent justice.

 

Question: A politician from your district, the mayor of Tirana, was arrested in his office a few months ago for, among other things, corruption and money laundering. Has corruption reached your government?

It is clear that people at different levels of government are also affected once corruption is involved. So the question is not whether corruption exists, but what are we doing to fight it and reduce its influence in government. And I am proud that we have done something big – radical: a judicial reform that, for the first time in our history since Albania’s independence in 1912, brought senior officials before an independent judiciary and led to indictments or convictions.

On the other hand, I believe that an organization, a company or a governing majority is not judged by whether one or several of its members are suspected of corruption or are under investigation for corruption, but by how they react in such cases. For decades, the answer was to form a protective shield and provide political support accordingly. We have put an end to this. Our party is not a protective shield for anyone; our majority in Parliament is only the protective shield of the independent judiciary./ CNA
