Maksia Haxhia, who, as was revealed by the wiretaps in Durrës prison that set in motion the General Council of the Chamber of Advocates against the ILD for Erion Veliaj, today issued a statement to the media to oppose and express criticism of the draft of the New Criminal Code presented on July 25 by the Minister of Justice Ulsi Manja.

According to Haxhi, the draft code has more penalties than during communism and discriminatory articles have been included.

"The draft of the Criminal Code has a mountain of problems. It should have come out with a communication to all actors, with the need that led to the preparation of this draft for this code. We do not have the presence of the need for a new code. It is not as a result of the need of the justice bodies.

"It has been changed 23 times. It is inquisitorial, Europe will not accept it. There are more repressive punishments than in the time of communism. Discriminatory articles have been added," said Haxhia.

He further said that the last resort will be to challenge the draft criminal code in the Constitutional Court.

"It contradicts the principles of a lawyer. As a last resort, we will have a challenge in the Constitutional Court," Maks Haxhia declared, among other things./ CNA
