Are Albania's EU membership negotiations being blocked? / European

The European Commission has reacted today regarding Albania's situation on the path towards European Union membership negotiations.

Through a communication with A2 CNN, the Commission emphasizes that it is now up to the member states to agree on the EU's common position for Group Chapter 1, which will establish the criteria for the closure of negotiations in the area of ??the Rule of Law.

Among other things, the European Commission recommends that Albania continue to strengthen the law enforcement record against corruption and organized crime, including drug trafficking. 

“The Commission has presented to the Council its positive assessment of the implementation of the Interim Assessment Report and a draft EU Common Position for the first Cluster. It is now up to Member States to agree on the EU Common Position for Cluster 1, which will set the benchmarks for the closure of negotiations in the area of ??Rule of Law. Albania needs to continue strengthening the law enforcement record against corruption (including high-level) and organised crime, including drug trafficking. Comprehensive and constructive engagement between the ruling party and the opposition, as well as with all stakeholders, is essential. Areas requiring further progress include: media freedom, prevention of corruption, electoral reform, implementation of minority rights, children's rights and property rights.
