Unique and colorful/ This is what Syria's new banknotes look like

Syria's President Ahmad al-Sharaa unveiled redesigned banknotes to replace those that bore images of ousted ruler Bashar al-Assad and his family.

This issuance is part of an effort to stabilize the currency and signal a break with the past after years of civil war.

Improving the position of the Syrian pound is among the biggest challenges for Syria's new authorities, who will remove two zeros, in a process known as redenomination.

New banknotes

The new banknotes, which range from 10 to 500 Syrian pounds, will enter circulation on January 1. They show images of roses, wheat, olives, oranges and other agricultural symbols for which Syria is famous.

After unveiling the banknotes, Sharaa said the new currency marks the end of a previous, regrettable phase and the beginning of a new phase that the Syrian people aspire to.

The new coin design is an expression of a new national identity and a move away from the veneration of individuals./CNA
