Glaciers in the Alps are melting/ What will happen to Europe in 2100?

The number of glaciers disappearing each year worldwide will increase significantly by 2100, according to a modeling study published in the journal Nature Climate Change.

The researchers, led by ETH Zurich, analyzed more than 200,000 glaciers from a database of glacier contours observed by satellites. They used three global glacier models and four global warming scenarios: 1.5 degrees Celsius, 2 degrees Celsius, 2.7 degrees Celsius and 4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2100.

The study authors note that limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, as is the goal of the Paris Agreement, could double the number of glaciers remaining by 2100 compared to a 2.7 degrees Celsius scenario. In a 4 degrees Celsius scenario, it was estimated that only about 18,000 glaciers would remain. In contrast, in a 1.5 degrees Celsius scenario, there would be about 100,000.

They also find that with a temperature increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius, glacier loss would peak in 2041 at about 2,000 glaciers per year. With a temperature increase of 4 degrees Celsius, this peak would occur later, in 2055, due to greater and more intense loss of glacier area and volume, and could reach 4,000 glaciers per year.

Ratings for the Alps

Areas that have many small glaciers at lower altitudes or near the equator, such as the Alps, Caucasus, Rocky Mountains and parts of the Andes and African mountain ranges located at low latitudes, are particularly vulnerable, and more than half of the glaciers are expected to disappear within the next ten to 20 years./CNA
