Saudi prince buys famous Da Vinci painting for $450 million

Leonardo da Vinci's painting of Jesus Christ, which sold for a record $450 million at auction last month, has been purchased by Abu Dhabi's department of culture and tourism.

The announcement was the latest twist in a saga over the painting, after it was reported that the buyer was Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

"Christie's can confirm that the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi, is purchasing Salvator Mundi by Leonardo da Vinci. We are delighted to see this extraordinary painting become available to the public at the Louvre Abu Dhabi," the auction house said in a statement.

Salvator Mundi (Latin for 'Savior of the World') is a painting attributed in whole or in part to the Italian High Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, dated around 1499–1510./ CNA
