Why do we dream or have nightmares?/ Neuroscientists with new study on the human

In a three-year research program, neuroscientists at Pennsylvania State University in the United States will study the brain, using advanced imaging techniques to better understand the neural mechanisms of nightmares and their links to anxiety-related mental health disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Scientists believe that every being dreams, but experts disagree on why this happens.

"We don't really know what nightmares are. If we knew what the optimal state of your brain is, what healthy happiness looks like, what healthy dreams look like. That could help us inform and solve what's gone wrong in different disorders and diseases that may have disrupted components, like with sleep, like things like Alzheimer's disease," said Patrick Drew, a professor of engineering, science and mechanics at Pennsylvania State University.

Dreams and nightmares are natural and humans are not the only beings who have them.

Researchers will observe changes in the size of the mice's pupils to determine which stage of sleep the mice are in, including rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM stages.

Most vivid dreams occur during REM sleep, and people are more likely to remember them if they wake up during this stage. /CNA
