Sunday is the longest night of the year/ What does the winter solstice

December 21, 2025 marks the winter solstice, one of the most important astronomical events of the year, which coincides with the longest night and shortest day in the Northern Hemisphere. This special moment comes just a few days before Christmas and marks the official beginning of the winter season.

During the winter solstice, the Sun is at its lowest point in the sky, causing its rays to reach the smallest angle over the Northern Hemisphere. As a result, the day is at its shortest length, while the night reaches its longest for the entire year.

This phenomenon represents a turning point in nature's annual cycle. After December 21, the days gradually begin to lengthen, bringing more and more light until the summer solstice in June.

The winter solstice has more than just scientific significance. In many ancient cultures and traditions around the world, this day has been celebrated as a symbol of the return of light, hope, and renewal. Historically, various communities have held ceremonies to mark the end of darkness and the beginning of a new natural cycle.

The scientific explanation for this phenomenon is related to the tilt of the Earth's axis, which is about 23 degrees and 26 minutes relative to the plane of its orbit around the Sun. This tilt is the main reason for the creation of seasons. While during the summer the Northern Hemisphere tilts towards the Sun, in the winter it tilts away from it, culminating precisely on December 21.

The winter solstice thus remains an important moment both for astronomy and for the symbolism related to light, nature, and the cycle of life. / CNA
