Mattel introduces the first Barbie with autism

Mattel has introduced its first autistic doll as part of its Barbie Fashionistas line, which already includes models with Down syndrome, blindness, vitiligo and various physical disabilities. The doll was developed over 18 months in collaboration with the Autism Self-Advocacy Network to reflect the experiences of people on the autism spectrum.

Her features include slightly offset eyes, articulated elbows and wrists, a loose A-line dress, flat shoes, pink toe clips, noise-canceling headphones, and a communication tablet. The goal is to show some of the ways autism can be expressed and represented in a sensitive and inclusive way.

The doll will be available online and at Target stores for $11.87, while Walmart stores will begin selling it in March. The move marks an important moment for inclusion and diversity in the toy industry. /CNA
