Sicilian mafia boss Messina Denaro, in "irreversible coma"

Sicilian mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, arrested after three decades on the run, is in a coma in hospital and unable to feed himself, media reported on Saturday.

This 61-year-old has been suffering from colon cancer for several years.

It was his decision to get medical treatment, which then resulted in his arrest, after going to a clinic in the Italian city of Palermo.

He faces several life sentences.

According to media reports, he is now in an "irreversible coma".

Messina Denaro is considered one of Italy's most ruthless mafia leaders and is accused of many crimes, including his role in the 1992 murder of anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone.

He has been found guilty of involvement in several bombings in Rome, Florence and Milan in 1993 and for the kidnapping and murder of a 12-year-old boy.

Messina Denaro disappeared in the summer of 1993 and has become one of the most sought after names in Italy.

Although there have been speculations that he has taken refuge in different places in the world, he was found near his birthplace in the west of Sicily./ REL
