Zelensky dismisses the Prosecutor General

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also officially fired Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin after investigations revealed that many government officials allegedly avoided military service by falsely claiming to be disabled.

Zelensky signed the decree to dismiss him on Thursday, after Ukraine's parliament voted to impeach Kostin two days earlier.

Kostin had said earlier that he would resign to take political responsibility, following the initiation of corruption investigations and suspicions that officials had used legal loopholes to avoid being drafted into the army.

Investigations recently found that some public prosecutors in Ukraine's western Khmelnytskyi region had improperly issued documents as persons with disabilities. This had enabled them to receive special benefits from the state and avoid military service at the same time.

The scandal has prompted widespread criticism at home and calls for a nationwide investigation, at a time when Ukraine is struggling to repel Russian forces, which launched an invasion of the country in February 2022.

After the announcement of Kostin's resignation, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that he had fired several senior officials involved in this scandal.

The issue of conscription has become sensitive in Ukraine, as the Ukrainian army is facing great challenges, especially with the reduction in the number of troops as a result of the fighting.

Military recruiters often appear at public events to monitor whether the controversial mobilization law is being enforced.

Zelensky has repeatedly admitted that the Ukrainian army faces "very, very difficult" circumstances./ Rel
