Zelensky wants talks on Ukraine's EU membership to start this year

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has said that he expects talks on Ukraine's membership in the European Union to start at the end of this year.

"The goal is to start negotiations this year and this is not only a goal, but a big goal," Zelensky said in Kiev, in a joint conference with the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the president of the European Council. Charles Michel.

"Ukraine and the EU, we are a family", said Michel.

"Ukraine's future is within the EU", he added, without mentioning time limits.

"Your determination to move the country forward leaves an impression," said von der Leyen.

She admitted that Ukraine has made some reforms, despite the war, but added that the EU membership process does not have "rough deadlines".

These statements were made in the framework of a summit that was held between the EU and Ukraine in Kiev.

Membership in the European bloc is a very complex and long process, as it is related to the harmonization of the laws of the respective country and those of the EU.
