US President Joe Biden has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until July 10 in honor of Shinzo Abe, the former Japanese prime minister who was shot dead while giving a speech today.
"Abe was a proud servant of the Japanese people and a loyal friend of the United States," the US president said in his statement. "Even when he was attacked and killed, he was committed to the democratic work, to which he dedicated his life," he added.
Biden plans to visit the Japanese embassy in Washington later to sign the condolence book. He also said he had tried to contact Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, whom he called very stable, adding that Japan is also "a very stable ally".
Earlier, Biden expressed his shock at today's fatal assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, calling him a champion of the US-Japan alliance who cares deeply for the Japanese people and democracy.
"I am shocked, outraged and deeply saddened by the news that my friend Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan, has been shot and killed during an election campaign. This is a tragedy for Japan and for all who knew him," Biden said in a statement. /CNA.al
