The fight with the fires in Los Angeles continues, dozens of victims

Firefighters are trying to contain the fires in Los Angeles, which continue to burn areas for the seventh day in a row.

The authorities recorded at least 24 dead people as a result of the fires, while 16 others are missing.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said it could be the worst natural disaster in US history, having destroyed thousands of homes and forced more than 100,000 people to evacuate.

According to officials, over 12,300 structures were damaged or destroyed.

The situation is expected to worsen with winds of 80 to 112 kilometers per hour, which, according to the National Weather Service, started Sunday night and will last until Wednesday.

Officials warned the entire population of Los Angeles County - of nearly 10 million residents - that they could be ordered to evacuate due to the flames and toxic smoke.

"These winds, combined with low relative humidity, will keep the fire threat high," Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said at a news conference.

What caused the fires?

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said detectives are continuing to investigate possible causes.

"Absolutely, everything is on the table," he said.

California's very wet years in 2022 and 2023 gave vegetation a boost, but it dried up last year due to drought, turning into trees.

Although strong winds and a lack of rain fuel wildfires, experts say climate change is also increasing the likelihood of such fires.

The fires in Los Angeles could turn out to be the costliest in US history.

According to a preliminary estimate by the medium AccuWeather, the value of the damages may reach up to 150 billion dollars./ Rel
