A journalist has been killed every four days in the past two years, according to the latest report by the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Agency (UNESCO).
The report was published on Saturday, the day when the International Day for Ending Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists is marked.
Of the 162 murders of journalists in 2022 and 2023 verified by the Paris-based organization, more than half were committed in a state affected by armed conflict.
Many media professionals have died in their hometowns, according to the report.
Those who died in non-conflict countries were killed because of a focus on organized crime and corruption, or reporting on protests, according to the report, which is published every two years and analyzes the safety of journalists around the world.
The report stated that the 162 verified murders of journalists in 2022-23 constitute
"an increase of 38 percent compared to the previous period, when UNESCO recorded 117 cases of murder. This period also constitutes the largest number of murders since the period 2016-2017".
"These crimes cannot go unpunished," UNESCO director Audrey Azoulay said in a statement.
The highest number of journalists killed in 2022 was Mexico, with 19 cases, while in 2023, the highest number of journalists killed, 24, was recorded in the Palestinian territories, UNESCO said.
According to the report, Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as Arab countries, are the regions with the highest number of journalists killed.
According to the report's findings, no one has been held accountable for most of the killings.
UNESCO has said that the global rate of impunity in 2024 has reached 85 percent, a slight decrease compared to 89 percent in 2018 and 95 percent in 2012./ REL
