Eight people lost their lives and two others were injured after the railway station shelter collapsed in Novi Sad, Serbia, said the Minister of Internal Affairs of Serbia, Ivica Dacic.

Two people are still trapped under the rubble and Dacic said rescue teams are trying to get them out.

Currently, close to 80 members of rescue teams are at the scene.

The Prime Minister of Serbia, Miloš Vu?evi?, said that this is one of the most difficult days in the post-war history of Novi Sad.

"We will insist that all those responsible are found and those who took care of the condition of this structure and this building are held responsible," said the Serbian Prime Minister.

He said the shelter that collapsed was built in 1964.

This railway station was built in 1964. In 2024, after three years of reconstruction, this station was reopened. On July 5, the opening of the reconstructed facility was attended by the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Goran Vesi?, the head of the Provincial Government, Maja Gojkovic, and the head of the Municipality of Novi Sad, Millan Gjuri?.

The Infrastructure of the Railways of Serbia announced that the shelter that collapsed "has not been subject to reconstruction within the works for the renovation of the station facility within the construction project of the Novi Sad-Subotica high-speed line".

As stated in the announcement of this company, as part of the reconstruction, work was done on the interior of the station, the roof and the facade above and below the shelter./ REL
