CCDH: Social network X, ineffective against election disinformation

The 'Community Notes' 'comments from users' feature that social network X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, uses to counter disinformation is "failing to counter false claims" about the US election, the Center Against Digital Hate (CCDH) said in a report published on Wednesday.

Of the 283 fraudulent posts on X that CCDH analyzed, in 209 of them, or 74%, not all users saw the 'Community Notes' feature through which false and misleading election claims were corrected, the report said.

"These 209 fraudulent publications included in our analysis, which have 2.2 billion views, did not display the notes in the 'Community Notes' function for all users," says CCDH, urging the company to invest in the security and transparency of the system.

Company X officials did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.

Social network X rolled out its Community Notes feature last year, allowing users to comment against false or misleading posts, leaving this task up to users themselves rather than a dedicated team censoring posts.

The report was released after X lost a CCDH lawsuit last year accusing the social network of allowing hate speech.

Social media platforms, including X, have been under scrutiny for years for spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories, including false information about elections and vaccines.

The secretaries of five US states asked billionaire Musk in August to regulate the X Network's AI-powered 'Chatbot' platform after it spread false information about the November 5 election.

Even Mr. Musk himself, who has offered support to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in July, has been accused of spreading false information. Polls point to a tight race in the US presidential election.
