The number of victims from the floods in Spain is increasing

The death toll from floods in Spain has reached at least 158, as rescue teams continue operations to find survivors.

On Tuesday, Spain was hit by a powerful storm with torrential rain that flooded homes, hitting the eastern region of Valencia the hardest.

According to rescue teams in Valencia, 155 dead bodies have been found in this region. Meanwhile, officials in Castilla La Mancha and Andalusia said that three more victims were registered in these two regions.

Previously on October 31, officials had said that the number of victims was 95, but given the high number of missing persons, this number is expected to increase.

"Please stay at home and follow the instructions of the emergency services. Now the most important thing is to save as many people as we can", said the Spanish Prime Minister to the residents of the affected areas.

King Felipe VI warned that rescue teams were still working in regions in the east and south, which were expected to be hit by rainy weather on Thursday.

Rescue teams, supported by over 1,200 troops, have continued to work to find survivors and clear roads.

Hundreds of people affected by the floods have been put in temporary shelters, while road and rail transport has been widely disrupted.

Authorities said it will take three weeks to reopen a motorway linking Madrid with Valencia, due to damage caused by the natural disaster.

Scientists have said that human-induced climate change is causing extreme weather events to be more frequent, more intense and last longer./ REL
