The Hungarian chief diplomat criticizes the EU sanctions during the visit to

During a security forum in Minsk, the Foreign Minister of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto, has strongly criticized the European Union sanctions imposed on Belarus and Russia. He said that dialogue is needed, not isolation.

The Oct. 31 visit marks a rare engagement by Hungary with Belarus, which is under the authoritarian rule of Alyaksandr Lukashenkas, especially as Lukashenkas' regime has cracked down on dissent following contested 2020 presidential elections.

Szijjarto strongly opposed sanctions targeting Russia because of the war Moscow launched against Ukraine in 2022, and sanctions against Belarus because of its suppression of the opposition and Minsk's support for Moscow.

"We do not accept any restrictions on those with whom we cooperate. We don't like the policy of sanctions", he said.

Speaking in Russian, Szijjarto signaled his intention to engage directly with the audience at the forum, saying "it is an honor for me to return to Minsk" and saying he hoped the talks during his visit would not be criticized by Brussels.

Hungary is a member of the EU, but does not support the sanctions imposed by the bloc on Russia. The Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, has constantly criticized the EU for the sanctions against Moscow and he also maintains good relations with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin./REL
