Turkey, 300 in handcuffs for links with the Islamic State

Turkish authorities have arrested 304 people suspected of links to the Islamic State militant group during an operation in 32 provinces, Turkey's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Friday.

Most of the suspects were caught in Turkey's three biggest cities, Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, Yerlikaya said in an announcement on the X social network.

He said that the operation "Operation Heroes-34" was held simultaneously throughout the country.

"We will not allow any terrorist to open his eyes, to ensure peace and unity for our people. We will continue the battle with great efforts of our security forces," he said.

He published footage showing the police entering apartments and putting the arrested into vehicles.

Islamic State controlled a third of Iraq and Syria in 2014. Although defeated, it continues to carry out attacks.

This militant group has carried out numerous attacks across Turkey, including in a nightclub on January 1, 2017 in Istanbul, where 39 people were killed.

Turkish authorities have stepped up operations against Islamic State and Kurdish militants in recent weeks, after Kurdish militants detonated a bomb near government buildings in Ankara on October 1.

Turkey has regularly carried out operations inside the country and in the north of Iraq against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PPK), which it describes as a terrorist organization./ REL
