At least eight people have died and 14 others have been injured as a result of flooding in the South Korean capital, Seoul.

Monday's torrential rains blocked roads, flooded subway systems and caused damage across neighboring provinces.

The weather agency in this country has said that in some areas the largest amount of rain has fallen in the last 80 years.

In the Dongjak area of ??the South Korean capital, more than 141.5 millimeters of rain was reported within an hour - the highest since 1942.

According to weather officials, the rain is expected to continue for several days.

At least 163 people in Seoul have been left without safe shelters and are staying in schools and other public facilities, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has asked government officials to evacuate residents from high-risk areas and called on businesses to allow workers flexible hours due to heavy traffic on the roads. Rel
