Israel reopened border crossings with Gaza on Monday after a ceasefire with the Islamic Jihad militant group brokered by Egypt halted the most serious outbreak of fighting around the Palestinian enclave in more than a year.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomed the ceasefire.

At least 44 people, including 15 children, were killed during 56 hours of violence, which began after an Israeli airstrike on a senior Islamic Jihad commander. Israel said it had acted to prevent a planned attack by the Iran-backed group.
