Ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza

A ceasefire agreement was observed overnight between Israel and Palestinian militants. The ceasefire comes after three days of violence.

Egypt brokered the ceasefire that took effect Sunday night. At least 44 people died in the latest violence.

The leaders of the United States and the United Nations have called on the parties to continue to respect the ceasefire.

US President Joe Biden called on all parties to respect the ceasefire "and ensure that humanitarian and fuel supplies can be sent to Gaza".

He also demanded that the cases of civilian deaths be investigated.

On Sunday night, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that 15 children are among the 44 victims recorded in the latest violence. The Palestinian side blamed "Israeli aggression" for these deaths. This ministry also reported over 300 injured.

Israel has blamed Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants for some of the recent deaths inside Gaza. The Israeli military on Sunday blamed the group for rocket attacks that killed several children in Jabalia.

Health officials in Gaza have raised concerns about the humanitarian situation, saying they do not have enough fuel to operate generators in hospitals, leading up to the ceasefire agreement.

Israel has said that it has the right to "respond strongly" if the ceasefire is violated./REL
