The first American Abrams tanks arrive in Ukraine

Ukraine has received its first shipment of US Abrams tanks, which are said to bolster Kiev's counteroffensive against Russian troops in the east.

“Good news from [Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem] Umerov. Abrams have arrived in Ukraine and are ready to reinforce our brigades. I am grateful to the allies for the implementation of the agreements on this matter," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Telegram, a week after US President Joe Biden said such tanks would arrive in Ukraine.

The United States in January agreed to send Abrams tanks to Ukraine as Kiev prepares for a counteroffensive against Russian forces that begin their invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

In total, Washington has said it will send 31 such combat tanks to Ukraine.

Earlier in September, the US said it would also supply Ukraine with depleted uranium conflict ammunition, which is used for M1 Abrams tanks.

Ukraine has said that it needs the tanks to strengthen its brigades after the launch of the counteroffensive in July./ REL
