Typhoon "Lan" hits western Japan

Evacuation warnings have been issued for more than 237,000 people in 11 prefectures in Japan after Typhoon Lan struck the country on Tuesday, according to the Japan Fire and Disaster Management Agency.

The typhoon made landfall near Shionomisaki in Japan's Wakayama Prefecture around 5 a.m. local time Tuesday morning with winds nearing 160 kilometers per hour (100 mph), equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane.

At least 26 people have been injured in five prefectures across western Japan, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK, CNN says.

In two cities in Tottori and Okayama prefectures, rainfall for several hours on Tuesday exceeded the average for the entire month of August.
