German Minister: Taliban rule steps towards returning to the Stone Age

Germany's Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, has condemned the government of Afghanistan by the Islamist group, the Taliban, on the two-year anniversary of the Taliban's usurpation of power.

"Two years of Taliban rule means two years of going back to the Stone Age for the people of Afghanistan ," Baerbock said in a statement on August 14.

Millions of people in Afghanistan are suffering from hunger under the rule of the Taliban, who are taking away one right of women and girls every day, she said.

Baerbock dismissed the possibility of Germany normalizing relations with the Taliban government, which has not been recognized by any country so far.

The Taliban seized power on August 15, 2021, after the departure of US and NATO forces. Since then, Afghanistan has lost development aid and financial support from Western donors.

After remaining under Taliban rule, Afghanistan has become one of the world's worst-hit countries by crisis, with more than 28 million people – or about two-thirds of its population – in urgent need of humanitarian aid, according to Human Rights Watch.

The theocratic government of the Taliban has imposed restrictions on every aspect of life in Afghanistan, including residents' physical appearance, freedom of movement, right to work and study, and access to forms of entertainment.

Women have suffered the most, and rights groups have accused the Taliban of trying to erase women from public life and imprison them in their homes.

So far, the Taliban have issued over 100 orders in line with their strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia Law.

Members of the "Morality Police" have publicly punished the violators of the decisions, sometimes even violently.

Men and women have been imprisoned, or beaten with whips in public spaces.

Many of the Taliban's orders and restrictions are reminders of their actions when they were first in power in 1996-2001, when they deprived Afghans of even the most basic rights.

Since returning to power, the Taliban have put the Constitution of Afghanistan under the table and changed the justice system./ REL
