Algeria bans showing of Barbie movie in cinemas

Algeria has banned the showing of the film Barbie in cinemas, under the justification that it conflicts with moral principles.

Barbie, the film that has grossed 1.2 billion dollars in cinemas worldwide, has been shown in Algerian cinemas from July 19 to August 13.

The company for distributing the film in this country has not announced a reason for its non-screening.

The 24 Algerie news agency said the film was withdrawn due to violation of moral principles, citing several sources.

"Algeria is involved in a controversial situation for Barbie, because of scenes that are for adults" and for hints about homosexuality, said the other news agency TSA.

Although the film has been supported by the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community around the world, there are no references to same-sex sexual relations in the film.

The Ministry of Culture in Algeria, which usually speaks out on these issues, has so far remained silent.

Other countries in the region have taken a similar decision.

Kuwait has banned the film, saying it is concerned about ethical issues.

The Ministry of Culture in Lebanon has said that it has asked the authorities to ban the screening of the film due to the "promotion of homosexuality".

This film has not been shown in Qatar, nor has there been an official announcement about it./ REL
