Protesting students leave the University of Southern California campus

Early Sunday morning, pro-Palestinian protesters left a camp set up at the University of Southern California after warnings that they would be arrested if they did not.

Prior to this development, the university announced that campus security officers, assisted by the Los Angeles Police Department, were clearing the area and that anyone who challenged this decision would be arrested.

“If you are in the center of campus, please leave. Those who do not leave may be arrested," the university's announcement on social media platform X read.

Graduation ceremonies are expected to be held on the campus of this university in Los Angeles in a few days.

Meanwhile at the University of Virginia, 25 people were arrested Saturday after police clashed with pro-Palestinian protesters who refused to remove tents from the campus.

The protests at American universities have been fueled by the conflict that began on October 7 when Hamas militants attacked Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages. Since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, over 34,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to the militant group that controls the Gaza region.

Protesting students demand the severance of financial ties of American universities with Israel, or with companies that do business with Israel, because of the war in the Gaza Strip.

Although some Jewish students have joined the protests, other members of this community say that the protests have turned into anti-Semitism./ VOA
