The US condemns Russian cyberattacks against European countries

The United States has "strongly" condemned a series of Russian cyber attacks against several European countries, including Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden and the Czech Republic.

According to the US, the attacks were carried out by a unit of Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU).

The US State Department said in a press release on May 3 that APT28, known as Fancy Bear, is responsible for attacks on a variety of targets – from defense and aerospace companies to infrastructure operators and political parties.

"We call on Russia to stop this malicious activity and adhere to its international commitments and obligations," DASH said.

Earlier on Friday, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Russia would face consequences for cyber attacks against her country. "We can now clearly attribute last year's attack to the Russian group, APT28, which is controlled by the Russian military intelligence service, the GRU," Bearbock said during a media conference in Adelaide on May 3.

"In other words, Russian state hackers have attacked Germany in cyberspace," Bearbock added.

Last December, Russian President Vladimir Putin said relations between Russia and Germany were largely frozen.

In January 2023, Berlin said Russian hackers had attacked several German websites, taking them down, in response to Germany's decision to send tanks to Ukraine. However, at that time the German authorities said that the attack did not have any significant effect./ Rel
