For 98-year-old Lidiia Lomikovska, the Russian occupation of Ukraine is worse than the Second World War, which she also experienced. She has learned to trust her instincts.

That's why when Russian forces entered her home village of Ocheretyne in eastern Ukraine, she and her family decided it was time to move.

However, under the pressure of the bombing, Lidiia soon became separated from her relatives, so she started walking west in slippers for 10 kilometers, the BBC reports.

"I took a stick and a wooden board [for support] and started. My legs were holding me, I wasn't holding them," she said.

The village she left behind is gradually turning into a hellscape as Russian troops approach. The closer they get, the stronger the artillery fire becomes. Entire apartment blocks and houses are slowly turning into rubble and dust.

"As I started to walk, I had to lie down several times. Once I lost my balance and fell on the grass. I fell asleep and then I continued walking," said the elderly woman.

She was eventually taken to a shelter for some rest, before being reunited with her granddaughter, Svitlana./ CNA
